Precepts is the practice of taking vows promising to practice moral discipline for 24 hours. It is a way of learning to lead an ethical Buddhist life. When we take precepts, we promise not to kill, steal, lie, or to engage in sexual misconduct, and to eat only one meal—at noon—during the 24-hour period. We then lead our life that day with our precepts vows held firmly in our minds.

Keeping pure moral discipline for one day is excellent practice for learning to lead a more ethical life in general.
